Holy Writ — Old Testament

The following quotes from the Old Testament are included for our Friends who belong to any of the various Christian Sects. I have used the Old Testament from the King James Version of the Bible.

ON THE VERTICAL SEPARATION OF POWER

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening. And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to inquire of God: When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws. And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee. If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace. So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said. And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. [Exodus 18:13-26]

FROM THE LIBERTY BELL

Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: [Lev 25:10b]

NATIONAL UNDERSTANDING

For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them. O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end! [Deut 32:28, 29]

CHOOSE YOU THIS DAY

Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good. And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel. And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey. So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. [Joshua 24:14-25]

WE NEED MIGHTY MEN OF VALOR

When Ezra listed the mighty men of valor of Israel, he said, And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel [America] ought to do [I Chronicles 12:32] Truly these are times that try men’s souls and we need leaders who have understanding of our times.

GOD WILL HEAL OUR LAND

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. [II Chronicles 7:14]

BLESSED IS THE NATION

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. [Psalms 33:12]

A PRAYER AGAINST AN UNGODLY NATION

JUDGE me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. [Psalm 43:1-5]

RIGHTEOUSNESS VS SIN

Righteousness exalth a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people. [Prov 14:34]

WILL WE REJOICE OR MORN

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people morn. [Prov 29:2]

HAVE WE GONE BACKWARD?

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have norished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone backward. [Isaiah 1:2-4]

ON THE HORIZONTAL SEPARATION OF POWER

For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us. [Isaiah33:22]

DO WE OBEY THE LORD?

But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth. [Jer 7:28]

But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD [Jer 12:17]
