Holy Writ — Old Testament

The following quotes from the Old Testament are included for our Friends who belong to any of the various Christian Sects. I have used the Old Testament from the King James Version of the Bible.

NOTE: To our Christian Friends, if you believe I have overlooked a Scripture, please send an email to Editor@americaforme.org with the citation and why you feel it applies; and, I will consider amending the list.

On Marriage and the Family in General.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. [KJV: Genesis 1:26-28]

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. [KJV: Genesis 2:24]

For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. [KJV: Genesis 18:19]

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. [KJV: Exodus 20:8-11]

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. [KJV: Deuteronomy 5:12-15]

And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. [KJV: Ruth 1:16-17]

Hear, ye children, the instruction of a Father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. [KJV: Proverbs 4:1-2

Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. [KJV: Proverbs 5:18-19]

A Husband’s Responsibility to His Wife.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun. [KJV: Ecclesiastes 9:9]

Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. [KJV: Malachi 2:14b-16]

A Wife’s Responsibility to Her Husband.

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. [KJV: Genesis 2:18]

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. [KJV: Genesis 3:16]

A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. [KJV: Proverbs 12:4]

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. [KJV: Proverbs 31:10-31]

Parent’s Responsibility to Their Children.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. [KJV: Deuteronomy 6:7; 11:19]

Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth. [KJV: Deuteronomy 11:18-21]

For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God. [KJV: Psalm 78:5-8]

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. [KJV: Proverbs 13:24]

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. [KJV: Proverbs 22:6]

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. [KJV: Proverbs 23:13]

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. [KJV: Isaiah 54:13]

Children’s Responsibility to Their Parents.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. [KJV: Exodus 20:12]

Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. [KJV: Deut 5:16]

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: [KJV: Proverbs 1:8]

My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. [KJV: Proverbs 6:20-21]

A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. [KJV: Proverbs 10:1]

Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers. [KJV: Proverbs 17:6]

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. [KJV: Proverbs 23:22]
