Holy Writ — Tanach

The following quotes from the Tanach are included for our Friends who belong to the Jewish faith. I have used the Stone Edition of the Tanach (SET).

It was on the next day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood by Moses from the morning until the evening. The father-in-law of Moses saw everything that he was doing to the people, and he said, “What is this thing that you do to the people? Why do you sit alone with all the people standing by you from morning to evening?” Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come unto me to seek God. When they have a matter, one comes to me, and I judge between a man and his fellow, and I do make known the decrees of God and His teachings.” The father-in-law of Moses said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. You will surely become worn out – you as well as this people that is with you – for this matter is too hard for you, you will not be able to do it alone. Now heed my voice, I shall advise you, and may God be with you. You be a representative to God, and you convey the matters to God. You shall caution them regarding the decrees and the teachings, and you sall make known to them the path in which they should go and the deeds that they should do. And you shall discern from among the entire people, men of accomplishment, God-fearing people, men of truth, people who despise money, and it shall be that you shall appoint them leaders of thousands, and leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, and leaders of tens. They shall judge the people at all times, and they shall bring every major matter to you, and every minor matter they shall judge, and it will be eased for you, and they shall bear with you. If you do this thing – and God shall command you – then you will be able to endure, and this entire people , as well, shall arive at its destination in peace.” Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law, and did everything that he had said. Moses chose men of accomplishment from among all Israel and appointed them heads of the people, leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, and leaders of tens. They judged the people at all times; the difficult thing they would bring to Moses and the minor thing they themselves would judge. [SET: Exodus 18:13-26]

Proclaim freedom throughout the land for all its inhabitants; [SET: Leviticus 25:10b]

For they are a nation bereft of counsel, and there is no discernment in them. Were they wise they would comprehend this, they would discern it from their end. [SET: Deuteronomy 32:28, 29]

And now, fear HASHEM and serve Him with wholeheartedness and truth; remove the gods that your forefathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt; and serve HASHEM. If it is evil in your eyes to serve HASHEM, choose today whom you will serve: the gods your forefathers served across the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve HASHEM! The nation responded and said, It would be sacrilegious for us to forsake HASHEM, to serve gods of others. For it is HASHEM our God Who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, Who performed these great wondrous signs before our eyes; He safeguarded us on all the paths upon which we walked and among all the peoples in whose midst we passed. HASHEM drove out all the peoples and the Amorites who inhabited the land from before us. We, too, will serve HASHEM, for He is our God!” But Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve HASHEM, for He is a holy God; He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your rebellious sins or your transgressions. If you forsake HASHEM and serve gods of the foreigner, He will turn and act harshly toward you and destroy you after having done good with you.” The people said unto Joshua, “No; we will serve only HASHEM!” Joshua said to the people, “You bear witness upon yourselves that you have chosen HASHEM, to serve him”; and they said, We are witnesses.” “So now, remove the gods of the foreigner that are among you and direct your hearts to HASHEM, the God of Israel.” The people replied to Joshua, “We shall serve HASHEM, our God, and we shall heed His voice.” Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and he set down decrees and laws for them in Shechem. [SET: Joshua 24:14-25]

When Ezra listed the mighty men of valor of Israel, he said, Of the children of Issachar, men with understanding for the times, to know what Israel [America] should do [SET: I Chronicles 12:33] Truly these are times that try men’s souls and we need leaders who have understanding of our times.

and My people, upon whom My Name is proclaimed, humble themselves and pray and seek My presence and repent of their evil ways – I will hear from Heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land. [SET: II Chronicles 7:14]

Praiseworthy is the nation that HASHEM is their God, the people He chose for His own heritage. [SET: Psalms 33:12]

Avenge me, O God, and champion my cause against an unkind nation; deliver me from a man of deceit and iniquity. For You are the God of my strength why have You abandoned me? Why must I walk in gloom because of the foe’s oppression? Dispatch Your light and Your truth, they will guide me, they will bring me to Your holy mountain and to Your dwellings. That I may come to the altar of God, to God, the gladness of my joy; and praise You on the harp, O God, my God. Why are you downcast, my soul, and why are you disturbed on my account? Hope to God, for I shall yet thank Him for the salvations of my countenance and because He is my God. [SET: Psalm 43:1-5]

Charity will uplift a nation, but the kindness of regimes is a sin. [SET: Proverbs 14:34] NOTE: Regimes that rob from one group in order to dispense “kindness” to others (Rashi).

When the righteous are ascendant, the people will be glad; but in the rule of the wicked, the people will groan. [SET: Proverbs 29:2]

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for HASHEM hath spoken: Children have I raised and exalted, but the have rebelled against Me. An ox knows its owner, and a donkey its master’s trough; but Israel does not know, My people does not comprehend. Woe! [They are] a sinful nation, a people weighed down with iniquity, evil offspring, corrupt children! They have forsaken HASHEM; they have angered the Holy One of Israel, and they have turned their back [on Him]. [SET: Isaiah 1:2-4]

For HASHEM is our judge, HASHEM is our lawgiver, HASHEM is our king; He will save us. [SET: Isaiah 33:22]

Say unto them: ‘This is the nation that would not listen to the voice of HASHEM, its God; and they would not accept rebuke! Faith is lost; it is detached from their speech.’ [SET: Jeremiah 7:28]

But if they do not listen, I shall uproot that nation, uprooting and destroying it – the word of HASHEM. [SET: Jeremiah 12:17]
